Mesh bamboo scarf knitting pattern

A lightweight, incredibly soft scarf perfect for a cool evening. Knit with 100% bamboo in a simple mesh pattern. Appropriate for beginners and more advanced knitters looking for a simple project that doesn’t require too much concentration.

This reversible scarf is approximately 3" wide and 60" long. To make a wider scarf, cast on a multiple of three stitches plus two (for example, 26, 32, or 38 stitches). To see variations of the pattern knit by others, please see my post titled More mesh scarves.

Abbreviations:

K1: knit one stitch
K2TOG: knit two stitches together
YO: yarn over

Supplies:

Southwest Trading Company 100% Bamboo (one ball)
Straight needles size US 10

Note: Your scarf-in-progress will look different than mine because it needs to be lightly blocked when finished to flatten it and open up the pattern. I block mine by dampening it with water and laying it flat on a towel on a table.

To knit the scarf:

Cast on 23 stitches

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Knit

Row 3: K1 *K1, YO, K2TOG*; repeat from *, end the row with K1

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until scarf reaches desired length, ending with row 3.

Knit two more rows and then b
ind off.

Lightly block the scarf to flatten it and accentuate the pattern.

Update: Here is an example of the same pattern knit in pink and white bamboo. This is one of my favorite scarves because the bamboo isn't scratchy against my neck, plus the pink just makes me feel pretty.

This is a great scarf pattern. I'm an editor for FaveCrafts.com and I took the liberty of linking to this pattern from my round-up of free scarf knitting patterns. You can check it out here: http://www.favecraftsblog.com/free-scarf-knitting-patterns-part-2/

Thanks for sharing!

I think this is a wonderful pattern, but you approximated that it's about 3" wide...? Is this accurate? I haven't started yet but I hope/think it will be wider than this.

First, TY for this great pattern. I've made it with all needle sizes from Size 4 up to Size 10. I've made it striped, solid and as an "infinity" scarf. They were all gifts and received RAVE reviews. It is so easy to stick the yarn and needles in my hand bag so I can work on it no matter where I am (after making a couple, I had the pattern memorized). TY TY TY

Thanks for your nice comment, stonesh. I'm glad you like pattern and have been able to make so many variations of it. I'd love to see it as an infinity scarf.

It was easy to make the infinity scarf, I made it about 30 inches long, twisted it several times and stitched the ends together. It lays perfectly inside the neck of a jacket and is so easy to wear, just put it over your head and adjust the twists to your liking.

Hi Stacy, still making beautiful scarves with your mesh bamboo pattern. Currently working on a red one, made with yummy soft microfiber sport yarn, 14 stitches on #10 needles. I do have a request. Since not all skeins are created equal, would you also include ounces and ply when you give suggested materials? I truely enjoy your blog. Sheila

Stacy said...

Hi Sheila, I will try to do that in the future. The red microfiber sounds nice-- microfiber is so very soft.

Love this pattern - it is a much improved Faggot stitch which has a "proper" border made by the last knit 1. Thanks for improving a stitch I have been using for a very long time!

Thanks, knittyangel and agypsyfoot, I appreciate your kind words.

This is a great pattern. I'd <3 to see more patterns made with "GREEN" yarns. TKS.

This is one of my favorite patterns to make a scarf...it is also easy to make a slit in the scarf so you can slide one side in and not have to wrap it around the neck. How do you make it a point at one end?

I really like this patten. Instead of a scarf, I plan to make a shawl. Thanks for the idea.

Where can I find bamboo yarn?

Thank you for this pattern. I made a blue and white (University of Kentucky) scarf in this pattern and it turned out very pretty!

This is a beautiful scarf! I am new to knitting and would love to make this. Where can I find 100% bamboo yarn? I noticed that you used 10" needles, I found some yarn with a lower percent of bamboo but it was for smaller sized needles, would you still used the size 10? Thank you!

To the last anonymous commenter:

You can get the Southwest Trading Company bamboo yarn that I used for this scarf online at places like www.yarnmarket.com.

The scarf looks good in just about any size needle, so I would go ahead and use smaller than a size 10 if you want.

Hello,

This is a beautiful pattern, and I've knitted a scarf with it. Have you attempted a matching beret with this pattern?

I am so impressed with your pretty lace scarves and can hardly wait to start knitting them. I have lots of family in New England who will love getting such darling scarves. Thanks a bunch for posting your unique but easy to follow designs. I too like working with bamboo and merino wool. Not much into synthetics.
